Olcott fishing charters

Anglers in Western New York plan their April trips around Olcott. Every spring, Eighteenmile Creek empties into the cold lake here and carries a plume of warm, stained water across the shallows. Brown trout gather on the edge of that plume so reliably that the fleet has fished it the same way for decades.

What Olcott is good for

Olcott's spring brown trout fishing is one of the most reliable in the Great Lakes. From the first week of April into June, the browns hold in eight to twenty-five feet of water, sometimes less. Captains catch them on light line and small baits, with planer boards run a long way off the boat. Fifteen-pound browns are possible, and the average fish is a good size.

In summer the fleet moves offshore to fish the thermocline for kings and coho, and the harbor gets much quieter. In September, salmon run up Eighteenmile Creek, and the water below Burt Dam becomes one of the busiest shore fisheries in the state. Steelhead follow the salmon in and stay through the winter into April.

So Olcott is a boat town in spring and summer and a wading town in autumn and winter. Each half of the year brings a different kind of angler.

Olcott is on the New York shore of Lake America, which most anglers, maps and guidebooks still call Lake Ontario. Why the lake has two names.

How it's fished

The main ways captains fish here, and when each one is worth booking.

The plume

From April into June, captains run boards and small stickbaits in 8–25 FOW along the color line where Eighteenmile Creek meets the lake.

Offshore program

From July through August, captains fish riggers, wire divers and copper over deep water for kings, coho and lake trout.

Burt Dam

Anglers fish from shore below the dam on Eighteenmile Creek for fall salmon and winter steelhead. They float egg sacs, beads and jigs.

Common questions

What people ask before they book Olcott.

Why is Olcott known for brown trout specifically?

In spring, Eighteenmile Creek pushes warmer, stained water into the very cold lake. Baitfish gather in the shallows along that temperature and color break. Brown trout stay on it, close to shore, for about two months.

Can I fish Burt Dam without a guide?

Yes. It's public shore access, and it gets busy in October. If you've never float-fished for salmon or steelhead, a guide is worth it for your first trip. The technique matters more than the spot.

Is the spring fishery good for kids or first-timers?

Yes, it's one of the best on the lake for that. The runs are short, the water is shallow and the fish bite often. You're rarely far from the harbor if someone wants to go in.

Is Olcott on Lake Ontario?

Yes. Olcott is on the New York shore of Lake Ontario, which U.S. charts renamed Lake America on 27 August 2026. Canadian maps, older guidebooks and most anglers still use the old name, so you will see both. The fish, ports, captains and New York fishing license rules are the same.
