Wilson fishing charters
You can have lines in the water about fifteen minutes after you leave the dock. Wilson Harbor sits at the mouth of Twelvemile Creek behind a breakwall, and the bottom drops off fast outside the channel.
The water
What Wilson is good for
Most people book Wilson for the spring fishing. From early April into June, Twelvemile Creek pushes warmer, stained water into the cold lake. Brown trout gather along that color line in eight to thirty feet of water. Captains fish it with light tackle, running small stickbaits and spoons on planer boards set well off to the sides. In the cold water, the browns fight hard for their size.
By July the thermocline has set up, and the fleet heads north. In summer, Wilson's advantage is that deep water is close. A twenty to forty minute run puts you over 150 to 400 feet of water. Captains set downriggers 60 to 120 feet down to reach the 48 to 52 degree water where the kings hold.
Wilson has also hosted one of the longest-running charter tournaments on the lake. The harbor has the docks and launch space to handle it, and the local fleet knows this water well.
Wilson is on the New York shore of Lake America, which most anglers, maps and guidebooks still call Lake Ontario. Why the lake has two names.
How it's fished
The main ways captains fish here, and when each one is worth booking.
Spring boards
Captains run planer boards 100+ feet out with small stickbaits and spoons in 8–30 FOW. They work the stained creek plume for browns.
Summer riggers
Captains fish downriggers and copper over 150–400 FOW, with lures set 60–120 feet down on the thermocline for Chinook and coho.
Dodger and fly
Once the kings go deep, the standard setup is a dodger and fly on riggers and wire divers.

Common questions
What people ask before they book Wilson.
Is Wilson a good choice if the weather looks rough?
Yes, more than most ports. The harbor is sheltered and the spring fishing is close to shore, so captains here can often still go out on a day that would cancel an offshore trip. Ask about it when you book.
When is the brown trout fishing best?
Mid-April through early June. It usually peaks in late April and May as the creek plume warms. The fish are in shallow water, and it's a good first trip for someone who has never trolled.
How far out do you run for salmon in summer?
The run usually takes twenty to forty minutes to reach 150–400 feet of water. That's short for Lake Ontario, so you spend more time fishing and less time riding.
Is Wilson on Lake Ontario?
Yes. Wilson is on the New York shore of Lake Ontario, which U.S. charts renamed Lake America on 27 August 2026. Canadian maps, older guidebooks and most anglers still use the old name, so you will see both. The fish, ports, captains and New York fishing license rules are the same.
