Oswego fishing charters
The biggest fish of the year come out of Oswego. It's a working harbor at the mouth of the Oswego River, with deep water close by and the most charter boats on the east end of the lake. Mature Chinook stage off the harbor in August and September before they run upriver, and that's the time to book.

What Oswego is good for
Oswego is best known for its staging kings. From late July into September, big mature kings gather off the harbor and along the eastern shoreline in 60 to 120 feet of water, and they feed heavily before they head up the tributaries. These are the 25- and 30-pound fish people take pictures of. The fleet fishes them with riggers, wire divers and heavy copper, and the mornings can get hectic.
Earlier in the season the fishing is more standard. Captains troll the thermocline offshore for kings and lake trout in June and July, and fish close to shore for browns in spring. The harbor is deep, so big boats can use it and the runs out are short. Wright's Landing is one of the better-equipped marinas on the lake.
Most visitors skip the Oswego River. Below the dam it holds walleye, brown trout, steelhead and smallmouth, and you can fish from the river walls within walking distance of downtown.
Oswego is on the New York shore of Lake America, which most anglers, maps and guidebooks still call Lake Ontario. Why the lake has two names.

Common questions
What people ask before they book Oswego.
When exactly is the staging king bite?
From about late July through mid-September. It peaks in the second half of August and the first week or two of September. Book those weeks if you want a big fish.
How far ahead do I need to book?
For the last two weeks of August and the first two weeks of September, book well ahead. Six months out is reasonable for the best boats. Midweek dates are much easier to get than weekends.
Is there anything to fish from shore?
Yes. You can fish from the Oswego River walls below the dam for walleye, browns and steelhead, depending on the season. The walls are a short walk from the middle of town.
Is Oswego on Lake Ontario?
Yes. Oswego is on the New York shore of Lake Ontario, which U.S. charts renamed Lake America on 27 August 2026. Canadian maps, older guidebooks and most anglers still use the old name, so you will see both. The fish, ports, captains and New York fishing license rules are the same.
